Interactive Map Shows Community Cleanups Sponsored by Councilmember O'Farrell

Hundreds of volunteers joined the office of Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell at more than 50 different community cleanup locations across the 13th District to beautify the neighborhoods and empower residents with an even greater sense of pride in their community, the Councilmember announced today.

As part of the event to mark one year in office, O'Farrell published an interactive map on his website which displays the location of each community cleanup that he sponsored during this past year, along with before and after photos, to highlight the hard work of the council office staff and volunteers. The map can be found here.

"When we keep our neighborhoods consistently clean, it raises the standards of keeping them that way, and the influence spreads block by block" said O'Farrell who spent a decade in public service working through the ranks in his predecessor's office. "I am so proud of what we have accomplished by spending two or three hours working together to improve the look and feel of our neighborhoods."

The Councilmember's community organizer worked with staff to identify locations, and then rallied Team Mitch for the cleanup events. The work included clearing debris from the sidewalks and tree wells, tree trimming, bulky item disposal and graffiti removal.

Virgil Village resident Ricardo U. Berg has volunteered at several of the cleanups and is encouraged by the significant turnout at each one.

“These cleanups are great because they improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods,” said Berg. “But what’s even more powerful is that they give people encouragement to go out and do this on their own.”

“I want to express my sincere gratitude to the volunteers who joined Team Mitch,” said O’Farrell. “This commitment and dedication to the community, and just being present with us during this process, is a tremendous help. I plan on continuing to foster this spirit of activism and harness this energy moving forward. I see so much pride, as well as a great future ahead for our neighborhoods.”

O’Farrell took office on July 1, 2013. Atwater Village, Hollywood, and Silver Lake are just a few of the neighborhoods he represents. A complete list, along with his bio, can be found here.
