I want to update you on what’s happening at Dorothy J. and Benjamin B. Smith Park, located off Franklin Ave and Sycamore Ave in Hollywood. [GOOGLE MAP]
When I took office last year, I met with the Department of Recreation and Parks (RAP) to talk about some of the projects that were in the pipeline. Smith Park was one of those projects.
The proposed ideas for Smith Park were a good first step, but I wanted to see something bolder, so I asked RAP to reimagine the possibilities. My office took part in several site visits, including one with members of the community, and together we came up with an even better, more eco-friendly plan.
The result is a newly imagined park, with drought tolerant plants and trees, decomposed granite paths, fixed bag dispensers for dog waste, and decorative single seat benches. The plans call for the installation of fitness equipment, and I asked the department to trim the tree canopy. This new vision will create an inviting, pedestrian friendly setting. I expect crews will finish the work by early fall.
I can’t wait to join the community and cut the ribbon on this newly improved park in the great 13th District! The plans for the park can be viewed here.
